Venugopal Accuses Centre of Weaponising ED, Congress Announces Nationwide Protests

Congress general secretary K C Venugopal accuses the central government of misusing the Enforcement Directorate for political vendetta, alleging seven years of harassment. He announces nationwide Congress protests, calling on party workers to defend democracy and oppose the targeting of opposition leaders.

New Delhi: Senior Congress leader and party general secretary K C Venugopal on Friday launched a sharp attack on the central government, accusing it of systematically misusing the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to harass and intimidate the opposition. Addressing party workers, Venugopal claimed that the Congress has been subjected to relentless pressure from the federal agency over the past seven years as part of a broader campaign of political vendetta.

Venugopal alleged that the ED has been deployed not as an independent investigative body, but as a tool to target the Congress’s top leadership and silence dissenting voices. According to him, the repeated summons and investigations have created widespread anger and resentment within the party ranks, reinforcing the perception that central agencies are being used selectively against opposition leaders.

Declaring that the party would no longer remain passive, Venugopal announced that the Congress is preparing for nationwide protests to expose what it describes as the abuse of investigative powers by the ruling establishment. He said the demonstrations would reflect the party’s collective strength and underline its resistance to what it sees as politically motivated actions aimed at weakening democratic opposition.

Calling upon Congress workers to take to the streets, Venugopal urged them to oppose political retaliation and stand firm in defence of democratic values. He emphasised that the party’s agitation would not only be about its own grievances, but about safeguarding the institutional integrity of agencies meant to function independently and fairly.

The remarks come amid an intensifying political confrontation over the role of central investigative agencies, a debate that has increasingly shaped the national political discourse. With the Congress signalling mass mobilisation, the issue is expected to further sharpen tensions between the opposition and the ruling government in the days ahead.
